War Child International Network

History:

War Child was founded in 1993 by two British film makers, after they had returned from the war zones in former Yugoslavia having made a film about the role of artists in war. Shocked by the plight of children – this war like so many in the world, was a war against civilians – they decided to use their film and entertainment background to raise money for the innocent victims of that gruesome war.

In 1994 the War Child Holland founder started activities in support of the War Child aims, which resulted in the founding of War Child Holland in the summer of 1995. This was followed by the founding of War Child Canada in 1998.

Since that time War Child has expanded their field of operations to include some of the other thirty wars and conflicts that are currently affecting millions of children around our planet.

From psychosocial workshops for children in Bosnia: Music Therapy in the bomb shelters of Sarajevo, to helping the children in Sudan and Afghanistan. And from projects for street children in Ethiopia to creative workshops in the Chechnyan refugee camps in Ingushetia. From Youth Media & Human Rights programs for Burmese refugees, to creative and sports programs in Sierra Leone. Community programs in Democratic Republic of Congo and mobile workshops in Kosovo. From material aid to Iraq to Afghan refugee education in Pakistan. War Child is working as hard as possible to take the war out of the child.

25 May 2008 – At an international happening at the Nieuwe Kerk in Middelburg on the 24 of May 2008, the Four Freedoms Award 2008 for Freedom Of Fear was granted to War Child Holland . The Freedom from Fear Award is awarded to War Child Netherlands for its indispensable assistance to children in war zones to help them create a peaceful future, and as a recognition of the important work carried out by the many volunteers who invest their time and resources for this noble cause.

The International Award was granted to dr. Richard von Weizäcker. The Award for Freedom of Speech and Expression went to Lakhdar Brahimi, the Award for Freedom of Worship was awarded to Karin Amstrong,  and the Award for Freedom of Want went to Jan Egeland.

They are operating in Canada and Holland and the UK.

What they do:

War child Canada:

War Child Canada provides humanitarian assistance in emergency situations and implements long term programs to provide children and youth with the opportunity to grow to their full potential through education, skills training, trauma healing and by taking an active role in the reconstruction of their communities.

War child Holland:

War Child Holland provides  psycho-social assistance to children affected by war and armed conflict in 11 countries, using a creative methodology based on musical, creative and sports activities. War Child Holland employs around 500 field staff and works with around 15,000 children per week.

General information:

21 September 2008 – War Child Holland organized another Peace, which was celebrated in Holland and Belgium with lots of fundraising and awareness activities. But Peace Day was also celebrated in the War Child project countries  Sierra Leone, Uganda, Afghanistan and Sudan,  with huge live peace signs made by communities and schools. In this way War Child would like to raise awareness for children who grow up in the midst of war; and focus on the importance of continuous dedication to peace in these areas.

GSM/GPS elephant tracking

I have seen something new on a site and its about tracking a bull elephant by google earth/maps to see it anywhere in the forest. Its useful because you can see where its going and to see if its going to a poaching area so the forest rangers can save it.  They found out that they can have geo-fence so they can have the bull elephant away from the towns. They will be safe there; here’s a picture that shows you the bull elephant that they found, he was in a pack of five and he was the only survivor.  He was put in a geo-fence to keep him from raiding farms.
